Keep in mind that no matter how scary a nightmare is, it is not real and most likely will not happen to you in real life. Have you ever had a dream where you knew you were dreaming during your dream?

Have you ever had a dream where you knew you were dreaming during your dream? This is called a lucid dream. Research has shown that lucid dreaming is accompanied by an increased activation of parts of the brain that are normally suppressed during sleep. Lucid dreaming represents a brain state between REM sleep and being awake. Lucid dreaming might seem paradoxical, but in fact it's a scientifically studied and recognized state of dreaming. Potentially, lucid dreamers can attain full awareness of their dreams while dreaming.

In their lucid dreams, they are able to reason according to the dream context, access waking life memories, and act out any plans that they have set out to embark on prior to sleep.4,5,6,7 Lucid dreamers are dream explorers, also known as oneironauts. Some people who are lucid dreamers are able to influence the direction of their dream, changing the story so to speak. While this may be a good tactic to take, especially during a nightmare, many dream experts say it is better to let your dreams occur naturally.

Once lucid in a dream, lucid dreamers are able to control what they dream about. Unrestricted by external physical laws and free of any social consequences, they are able to reshape their dreams while dreaming and, by doing so, live out extraordinary dream experiences. Only their imaginations limit what is possible in their dreams. If we accept that lucid dreams can have beneficial effects on our mental health, we must also accept that negative lucid dream experiences can influence our mental health negatively. Having lucid dreams in which you intentionally hurt yourself or other people would not be a healthy use of lucid dreaming.

A lucid dream is an extremely vivid dream. in a lucid dream you are aware that you are dreaming. you can train yourself to do reality checks throughout the day so it gets cemented into your subconscious. this way you will do reality checks in your dream to see if you are actually dreaming. this is a way to become lucid. common reality checks include holding your nose shut and looking at a digital clock. this is because in your dreams you can still breath if you hold your nose shut, and numbers are disordered commonly. once you are lucid you have the power to do whatever you want. fly, make things appear, make things disappear, or change locations...the list is endless.
