Many people cast a fisheye towards the concept of reincarnation because they’ve heard claims from people who believe themselves to be the reincarnation of famous people. There are jokes about everyone who thinks they are the reincarnation of Cleopatra or Napoleon.

It’s hard for people to take reincarnation seriously when they think belief in one’s own past lives is just an ego-driven need to feel important. It is true that most people who believe in reincarnation are actually sensible, well-balanced folks. However, a high percentage of them seemed to be reincarnations of famous people from the past. That begged the question as to why. The answer appears to be fairly simple – validation. Dr. Walter Semkiw is currently doing a lot of research into reincarnation, and his focus is on historic personages.

That makes sense because he can find a lot more evidence to back up the claims when the historic person’s life was well documented. If someone is having memories of a past life, it’s much easier to validate when they were in the public eye to the point where their lives were written about in the newspapers of the time and when their personal letters are available to read in some archive. Compare that to trying to validate the life of some farm woman in England from the early 18th century where the only documentation of her life was a few notations in the local church records or possibly taxation rolls. It’s the same for the average person. When people start having memories of past lives, it’s a lot easier to believe when they can back it up with historical evidence.

When you’ve got memories of a past life that you can’t possibly back up with historical documentation, it’s common for folks to brush it off as daydreams or their imagination. However, when you’ve got documentation staring you in the face that matches up with your memories and you are a dead ringer for contemporary portraits of that person, you are a lot more likely to accept it as reality. Thus, it makes sense that people who were well known figures in history would be more accepting of their past lives and would feel more confident talking about it publicly.
